Outrage over sodomy remarks
Apology over Mullen's call for sodomy health warning tattoo

Outrage over sodomy remarks

Tuesday, 7 October 2008

Oh lord here we go again. The apologies may have been issued, the contriteness may be there for all to read but we can’t help thinking attention must be drawn to words recently written by Church Of England priest and Telegraph columnist Rev Peter Mullen.

Via his internet blog Mullen recently shared his view on homosexuality suggesting homosexuals should, in keeping with the style of health warnings on cigarette packets, have their backsides tattooed with the slogan: "Sodomy can seriously damage your health" whilst gay chins should be graced with the slogan "fellatio kills".

His blog has also called for Gay Pride parades to be outlawed with Mullen saying that these "obscene and coercive" pantomimes disfigure our high streets.

He has since issued a full and complete apology - leaning on the old favourite ‘some of my best friends are gay’ defence. Apparently Mullen has nothing against homosexuals as many of his friends were of that "persuasion" but added he was against "the militant preaching of homosexuality". In a statement about his most recent comments Mr Mullen, who is rector of St Michael's, Cornhill, and St Sepulchre-without-Newgate, said: "I did not intend to cause any upset but I realise that the remarks were injudicious and I have caused offence. I want to issue an apology.

"I did not intend to cause offence when I made some joking remarks about homosexuals. I was not actually meaning to criticise individual homosexual persons, but the promoters of gay culture. However, my remarks have caused offence and for this I am sorry and make a full and complete apology."

Well that’s okay then.

We await interesting slogans for certain priests and the threat they pose to our health with interest.

I'm guessing that Mr Mullen objects to me, one of the directors of Real City Network, as someone who is involved in the promotion of gay culture as an equally valid alternative to heterosexual culture - so I feel compelled to comment on this story.

I think I'd like to object to the militant preaching of religion which is, historically, a much bigger threat to our health than sodomy or (that not-so-silent killer...) fellatio! I object to the fact that I was indoctrinated from an early age without my consent and fed a story of love and forgiveness whilst largely ignoring the billions who have died in so called holy wars in the name of one god or another.

And I object to flippant homophobic jibes that are intended to marginalise vulnerable people and incite hatred - especially from someone in a position of trust.
