As the Anglican community prepares for the Lambeth conference July 16 – August 3 - a three week international gathering of Anglican bishops which takes place every decade, many will remember that the 1998 Conference was dominated by the issue of homosexuality and the Church. Add the fact that the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire has not been invited to the Conference and the LGBT community felt the need to repond.

Manchester is showing its support by hosting Celebrate on the 12th June. Guests include The Bishop of Manchester, the Dean of Manchester Cathedral, Manchester Cathedral Choir, Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus with speakers Paul Martin of The Lesbian and Gay Foundation and Trans Campaigner Christine Burns.

The Bishop of Manchester has said that he is committed to having a broad church which honours everyone irrespective of faith, race, gender or sexuality but in 2008 many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people (not least among the young) often feel alienated from the church.

A spokesperson for LGF said “It is hoped by all concerned that the service will be a useful way in which we can advance our work together for the benefit of all in our communities to promote tolerance, understanding and break down the barriers which prevent LGBT people from being fully welcomed by the Anglican Church.”
